The European Leadership Network (ELN) launches the multi-year Program for the Balkan countries. This conference was held in London in the home of UK Parliament, the Palace of Westminster, on Friday 24 June 2022.
The ELN, with the support of the Southeastern Europe Security Centre, is launching this multi-year programme in order to strengthen the capacity of parliaments and individual legislators in scrutinising security policy, filling a clear gap in the region’s security. This one-day conference brought together British Parliamentarians and representatives from the Balkans, while it was organised in three different sessions didicated to specific themes.
Being invited by the Chairman of ELN, Lord Browne of Ladyton, Lazim Destani had the pleasure to participate in this coference.
Regarding the event, Destani wrote on his Facebook profile, “Being invited by the head of European Leadership Network, Lord Browne, I had the pleasure of participating in the Conference that was held in the home of UK Parliament. This Conference brought together British Parliamentarians and representatives from the Western Balkans to achieve the aim of establishing an independent, non-partisan programme that will build cross-regional parliamentary capacity to hold executive branches to account in security matters.
Among the British Parliamentarians attending the conference I would single out Lord George Robertson – former Secretary General of NATO and former Secretary of Defense of the United Kingdom and Lord Browne of Ladyton – former Secretary of Defense of the United Kingdom and Chairman of the European Leadership Network. The event was also attended by Parliamentarians from the Balkans, as well as representatives from the business world.
The opening and keynote speech of the Conference was that of Lord Robertson, while from the topics of this conference I would single out that of the first session dealing with the security of the Balkan region: The current situation in the Balkans against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
At the hosted dinner I had the opportunity to greet the participants and thank our international friends for the continuous support they give to the countries of our Balkan region. Political security and stability are important factors for cooperation and economic development in the region.”
